Basile Chiasson is a widely recognized legal expert in general civil litigation, personal injury litigation, administrative law, municipal law, and land use law. He was appointed Queen's Counsel (now King's Counsel) in 2003.
Basile has gathered various recognitions in his career. Early on, Basile received the Lawyer of the Year Award, an award bestowed upon him by the New Brunswick Association des Juristes d'Expression Française. In 2022, he became the first New Brunswick lawyer to be twice awarded the prestigious Distinguished Service Award of the Canadian Bar Association, New Brunswick Branch, having received it on 2004. In 2022, his unique contribution to the practice of law and law reform was recognized by the Canadian Bar Association, a 36,000 members strong organization, by being awarded the national Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award. He is the only lawyer in New Brunswick having received this award and the second in Atlantic Canada. In 2023, the Law Society of New Brunswick awarded him the prestigious Franklin O. Leger, K.C., award given in recognition of outstanding meritorious service and dedication in accordance with the highest ideals of the legal profession.
Established author, Basile regularly publishes in various law reviews and newsletters in New Brunswick, elsewhere in Canada, and in the United States of America. He has published more than 76 articles and is the author of the Rules of Court of New Brunswick Annotated, a book originally published in 1989. This book is reference material for law offices in New Brunswick, as well as for judges of the Court of King’s Bench and of the Court of Appeal of New Brunswick. There have been eight updates published and a ninth one is being written. Finally, he is also the author of Summary Judgment: The Shifting Culture, a book published in 2021 and widely used by the practicing bar.
Basile is a regular speaker at various legal functions, including Continuing Legal Education sessions in New Brunswick, elsewhere in Canada, and has been a guest speaker for the Canadian Department of the International Municipal Lawyers Association at its annual meetings in the United States. He is also the Editor of the Solicitor's Journal, a newsletter published quarterly by the Canadian Bar Association, New Brunswick Branch.
Basile has taught Torts Law at the Faculty of Law of the Université de Moncton in Moncton, New Brunswick, between 2012 and 2014, and again in 2023-2024. He has also taught Civil Procedure at that faculty of law for two terms in 2023.
